Who we are

PICNIC is the first impact investment fund focused specifically on urban parks and green spaces. It is a pioneering partnership between Environmental Finance, the National Trust and Access Foundation and is funded through the Big Lottery Fund and Big Society Capital.

Our aims

PICNIC’s vision is to unlock the potential in charities, social enterprises and profit-with-purpose companies with a social mission who are seeking to trade, or grow their trading, from park-based sites; and to foster community cohesion, environmental benefits, employment opportunities, health and well-being amongst other relevant outcomes

Why we do this

Good quality greenspace is associated with good physical health, mental well-being and social cohesion. Funding for investment and maintenance in the UK’s urban greenspaces is at an all-time low. We are working to create a sustainable business eco-system of socially motivated enterprises to support our greenspaces so they are maintained, protected and can be enjoyed for many generations to come

How we do this

PICNIC is a £3.3m fund, offering unsecured loans of between £25,000 and £150,000 which can be supported by up to £30,000 in repayable grant funding. Each applicant is supported to ensure their growth plan is sustainable, and successful borrowers are given comprehensive, continuous mentoring to help their ventures thrive

We expect to invest in around 60 projects and organisations over the next 4 years, directed principally across three cities with an initial focus on Newcastle
